Can Anxiety Be Linked to Chronic Pain? Exploring the Gut-Brain Axis
If you’re living with chronic pain and anxiety, you’re not alone.
These silent struggles often go hand-in-hand—tight muscles that won’t relax, sleepless nights filled with worry, and that constant hum of discomfort that just won’t go away. Maybe you’ve seen countless doctors, tried different medications, or even questioned if it’s “all in your head.” But what if your head and your body were simply trying to send the same message—through a common, deeply connected pathway?
This is where emerging science around the gut-brain axis is offering us powerful new insights. Functional medicine practitioners and researchers are increasingly recognizing that anxiety and chronic pain don’t just coexist—they often interact. And at the center of it all is your gut.
You see, the gut isn’t just for digestion—it houses over 70% of your immune system and produces more than 90% of the body’s serotonin, a key neurotransmitter that regulates mood, sleep, and yes—even pain. The vagus nerve acts as a two-way communication line between your gut and your brain, sending signals that can either calm inflammation and anxiety or amplify pain and stress. This delicate balance is what scientists call the gut-brain axis—a concept that’s revolutionizing how we understand both emotional and physical health.
I know this firsthand because I’ve lived it.
At age 40, my health began to unravel. I experienced widespread pain, relentless digestive issues, and brain fog that made even simple tasks feel overwhelming. I was exhausted, anxious, and desperate for answers. Traditional medicine offered me pills, but no real explanation. So I began my own research journey—one that led me deep into the world of functional nutrition, gut health, and ultimately, healing.
What I discovered changed everything.
When I began supporting my gut health—removing trigger foods, replenishing nutrients, and reducing toxic load—I noticed the anxiety lift, the pain fade, and my energy return. Today, through my Brain Longevity Blueprint and wellness coaching based here in South Carolina, I help others discover this same healing pathway—because anxiety and chronic pain are not life sentences. They’re signals.
And when we learn to listen, we begin to heal.
The Overlapping Worlds of Anxiety & Chronic Pain
Anxiety and chronic pain are more than just buzzwords—they’re everyday realities for millions of Americans, particularly in midlife. If you’re between the ages of 45 and 55 and feeling like your body and mind are no longer cooperating, you’re in good company. According to the CDC, over 20% of U.S. adults experience chronic pain, and nearly one in three adults report symptoms of anxiety or depression—with numbers even higher among women and high-stress professionals. In South Carolina and across the Southeast, the combination of modern stress, fast-paced lifestyles, and processed food culture only makes these issues more prevalent.
But here’s what many don’t realize: anxiety and chronic pain often go hand-in-hand. In fact, they can trigger and worsen each other in a frustrating loop. This is what I like to call the “chicken or the egg” dilemma—did the chronic pain lead to anxiety, or did anxiety create a pain-filled body? Truth is, it can work both ways.
Chronic pain wears down your resilience over time, affecting your sleep, energy, and mood. This can lead to heightened emotional responses, especially anxiety. On the flip side, anxiety floods the body with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, keeping your muscles tight, your digestion off-track, and your nervous system on high alert—essentially priming your body for pain.
This constant state of “fight-or-flight” means your body is always bracing for danger, even when you’re just trying to get through your day. Your gut slows down, your muscles tighten, and inflammation takes root. Over time, this can lead to issues like back pain, joint pain, tension headaches, digestive distress, and fatigue—all while your brain stays stuck in survival mode.
It’s a vicious cycle—but the good news is, once we understand the biology behind it, we can begin to break it.
What is the Gut-Brain Axis, and Why Should You Care?
Think of the gut-brain axis as a two-way communication superhighway—one that runs directly between your digestive system and your brain. This isn’t just poetic imagery—it’s scientific fact. Your gut and brain are in constant conversation, sharing updates via nerves (like the vagus nerve), immune signals, and even the gut microbiome (the trillions of bacteria that live inside your digestive tract). What’s happening in your belly can directly impact your thoughts, mood, and even pain levels—and vice versa.
When your gut is out of balance—due to things like processed foods, chronic stress, toxins, or infections—it sends distress signals to your brain. This can show up as brain fog, irritability, low motivation, and yes—even anxiety. On the flip side, if you’re constantly anxious or overwhelmed, your brain tells your gut to tense up, slow digestion, and divert resources away from healing. That’s how we get caught in the loop of chronic inflammation, poor nutrient absorption, and persistent pain and fatigue.
Here’s a real-life example: I’ve worked with women in their late 40s who were struggling with both IBS symptoms and high anxiety. After just a few weeks of focusing on healing the gut—through personalized nutrition, digestive support, and reducing toxic load—their stomach issues began to ease. But what surprised them most? Their mood lifted. They felt calmer, more focused, and even slept better. That’s the gut-brain axis in action.
And as a believer, I see this connection as no accident. God designed our bodies to function as whole, integrated systems. He knit us together so intricately that what affects the gut can also affect the mind, the skin, the joints, and beyond. Healing doesn’t start with a quick fix—it begins with restoring balance from the inside out.
So yes, you should care about the gut-brain axis. Because once you support your gut, you begin to experience profound shifts—not just in digestion or energy, but in your peace, clarity, and purpose. And that, friend, is a journey worth taking.
How Gut Imbalances Can Trigger Both Pain and Anxiety
When your gut is imbalanced, your whole body feels it—but often, it’s your brain and your nervous system that take the hardest hit. One of the most common root causes I see in clients dealing with both anxiety and chronic pain is something called leaky gut. And yes, it’s just as unsettling as it sounds.
Leaky Gut = Leaky Brain?
When the lining of your gut becomes compromised—often due to stress, processed food, medications, or toxins—it allows unwanted particles like bacteria, undigested food, and toxins to leak into the bloodstream. This sparks an immune response, causing systemic inflammation. But here’s the key: inflammation doesn’t just stay in the body—it crosses into the brain.
The result? You feel foggy, moody, and anxious. In fact, recent research shows that the same inflammatory markers linked to leaky gut are also tied to depression, anxiety, and even neurodegenerative issues. So when I say “gut on fire = brain on fire,” I mean it literally.

Nutrient Deficiencies: Fueling the Fire
An inflamed or leaky gut also struggles to absorb critical nutrients—especially the ones that keep your nervous system balanced. This includes magnesium, B vitamins, omega-3s, and zinc—all essential for calming the brain, supporting neurotransmitters, and reducing anxiety. Without them, your body’s stress response stays on high alert, and chronic pain becomes harder to manage.
Microbiome & Mood: Your Inner Pharmacy
The bacteria in your gut are like tiny pharmacists—they produce neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, all of which regulate mood and perception of pain. But when your gut flora is off (what we call dysbiosis), it disrupts this delicate balance. Low serotonin? Say hello to anxiety and irritability. High cortisol? That’s the body’s stress hormone—and when it stays elevated, it makes pain feel worse and recovery feel impossible.
By tending to the gut first, you begin to regulate these deeper systems—quieting both the brain and the body.
You’re Not Broken — You’re Out of Balance
If you’ve been living with chronic pain and anxiety, it’s easy to feel discouraged—like your body is failing you or your mind just can’t catch a break. But here’s the truth: it’s not just in your head or your body—it’s in your gut. The gut-brain axis is a powerful, science-backed connection that helps explain why you feel the way you do and—more importantly—how you can begin to heal.
When your gut is inflamed or out of balance, it sends distress signals that show up as mood swings, tension, sleep issues, and lingering pain. But once we begin to support digestion, reduce toxins, and nourish the body with real, healing food and targeted supplements, the brain responds with clarity, peace, and relief.
You don’t have to walk this path alone.
This is the exact journey I took, and it’s the one I now guide others through with faith, compassion, and strategy. Healing is possible—because your body was designed to heal when given the right tools.
